Tura Satana painting process 01

Here’s some process photos of a Tura Satana painting I completed a couple of months ago. The initial drawing was quite stylised as you can see from the Photoshop rough and the sepia sketch on canvas. As I progressed I felt I wasn’t capturing her unique look despite repainting her face a couple of times. Finally I re-gessoed the canvas and started again. This time I went for more realism paying close attention to the shape of her eyes and jawline.

Suzie quilt by Chris Jones

‘Suzie’ vector illustration

This year, I was delighted to hear from Queenslander Chris Jones, a talented quilter and textile artist. Chris has created a new quilt based on one of my vector illustrations. As you can see the “Suzie” quilt looks pretty amazing and it’s definitely the first time I had a drawing turned into textile art! I love the bright red dress which definitely gives it a much more festive Chinese feel.

Chris’s piece was part of the Glad Rags exhibition showcasing the work of quilting group Purple Paddo Patchers. Check out Chris’s blog here where you can see more of her work and photos from the Glad Rags show.

These are some illustrations I did for educational publishers Cengage Learning last month. Entitled “Life on Wheels” they are part of a set of laminated cards to be used in US schools. Both of these were hand drawn then coloured in Photoshop.

Here is my entry for the Out Of Controller competition Nintendo are running.
Check out the details here.
I chose Pauline (the original Donkey Kong damsel in distress) and the great ape from the old Donkey Kong game (1981) and turned them into cheesy cabaret musicians. Here are the roughs, a detail view and the final painting. It was painted in acrylics on watercolour paper a bit larger than A4.
